More 90's Throwbacks

Overalls

I have noticed this trend more, and more. The last time I wore a pair of overalls, was probably 1999.  This is defiantly one fashion trend I will follow this year.  Not the I need to go do yard work style.  I am obsessing over the tailored, fun colors, that can be dressed up with a pair of heels and tons of accessories.

Hydrate

Dealing with winter & dry skin

Now that winter has arrived, you probably have extremely dry flaky skin.  Preventing dry skin can become a tedious routine, but nobody likes dry itchy skin.
  • Drink more water
  • Don't take hot showers - hot showers will only dry out your skin
  • Exfoliate your skin in the shower.  I use Dove go fresh Pomegranate and Lemon Verbena Scent Revive Body Wash.
  • I use baby oil before getting out of the shower while I am still damp to lock in the moisture, and gently pat skin dry.
  • Moisturize your face.  I recommend Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel Cream

Remember dry skin can lead to wrinkles, and staying hydrated, and moisturizing will help prevent this.

Fringe

Minnetonka Moccasin

I am obsessed with Minnetonka Moccasin shoes.  I own numerous pairs, and they come in so many styles.  From boots, to moccasins, and slippers - they are so comfy.  I love wearing the fringe boots.  You can wear them with jeans, leggings, skirts, and shorts - one shoe so many looks.

Detox

Epsom Salt Detox Bath

It seems like detoxes are trending all over.  You can detox with smoothies, body wraps, diets, and baths.  You can sit in steam rooms, or drink a lemon water/cayenne pepper detox - which will make you hate everyone around.  I have tried a lot of those trends, and the only thing they accomplish is me wanting to eat a whole COSTCO sheet cake - chocolate with vanilla icing.  I tried the body wrap, I lost nothing besides $65.  I could have used that money for a new pair of heels, or a mini shopping trip to Sephora.  Sigh.

So, I decided to do some research on a good detox to do at home that won't break my piggy bank budget.

Need more of a reason why you should try the detox bath?  Below are a few that I have read about.
  • Relieves stress
  • Makes your skin soft
  • Helps flush out toxins and impurities
  • Can help out with weight loss
Add one cup epsom salt to hot bath, and soak for 25 minutes.  You can drink water or tea while relaxing in the bath.

I have tried the epsom salt detox bath twice, and feel really relaxed after.  I will keep you updated on this.

Winter Skin

Chapped.

There's nothing worse than chapped lips, and nasty cuticles.  Meet my best friend - Aquaphor.  This is an everyday staple in my beauty routine.  It heals chapped lips, dry cuticles, and even a great under-eye moisturizer.   A little dab will go along way - all of this for around $5.  You can also fake the perfect glow by dabbing a small amount around your cheekbones to create a perfect dewy look.

Primer

Monistat vs. Smashbox - Primer

Monistat Chafing Cream used as a primer? What.  Yeah – my thoughts exactly.  I have watched numerous YouTube makeup tutorials, and Monistat is being used as a primer.  I fell in love with Smashbox Photo Finish Primer when I received a sample from Sephora.  BUT spending $36 for one ounce can get expensive.

So, my first attempt to buy the “primer” was not successful.  I guess everyone knows about this little beauty secret, and Target was sold out.  I was finally able to purchase it, and I was a little nervous buying it.  Why aren't there self checkouts at Target?!

Monistat has a powdery texture, and goes on smooth.  I do use a moisturizer before applying the primer, and my foundation lasts all day.  This is probably one of the best beauty buys I have ever tried.  The best part is it only costs around $6.

Both Smashbox, and Monistat have the same ingredient - dimethicone.  I haven't broken out, and I have sensitive skin.

Final result - I no longer purchase the higher end brand.

P.S. Good luck finding it - it's always sold out.

Best Drug Store Masque

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque

I love doing home facials, especially on Friday nights after a long work week.
Queen Helene makes a few different types – mud, grape seed peel off, and a mint julep masque.  I have not tried the mud, but LOVE the mint julep masque.

The mint julep masque has been around forever, and probably has received better reviews than some of the higher end products.  This masque will help shrink pores, clear up acne, and help with all the impurities trapped in your
pores.

I wash my face before, applying with Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub.  Next, I apply the masque, when applying around my eyes I use my ring fingers.  This will help prevent fine lines, and wrinkles.  You should always use your ring finger when applying moisturizer or makeup around your eyes.  Your ring finger has the lightest touch, and won’t pull your skin causing wrinkles.

I love this masque.  It feels refreshing, cool, and tingly for the first few minutes.  The mint smell is very relaxing too.  I normally leave the masque on for about thirty minutes.  You can also dab the masque on problem areas, and leave on overnight.  After the masque has hardened, you can remove it with cool water.  I apply a moisturizer while my skin is still damp – Olay Total Effects Moisturizer.

For under $5 you really can’t beat the price, and this product isn't tested on animals.  The only downside to the masque is the smell once it dries.

The Perfect Red

Russian Roulette & Glitter

I adore Russian Roulette (essie) nail polish.  It's defiantly my go to red nail polish.  Not only is it classic, red nails look good with everything.  I decided to add a glitter accent nail on both ring fingers - The Living Daylights (OPI).  The perfect nail polish can be the best accessory to any outfit.

ELF

Falsies

Love e.l.f. (eyes lips face) makeup.  Their brand is practical, and can be compared to higher end brands.  The products are 100% cruelty free - NOT tested on animals, and do not contain animal derived ingredients.  Do you need more reason to try their products?  Well, the prices are cheap, and they offer great online deals (elf online), and can be purchased at your local Target store.

I am in love with their false eyelashes, and they are only $1! My recent trip to Target they had a three pack ($3) of various styles.  So, I had to purchase!

Lady Godiva

Essie - Lady Godiva

I fell in love with dark nail polishes when Chanel introduced Black Satin.  I remember when that polish came out - it was impossible to find.  I ended up spending $50 on a bottle on Ebay. Ever since then, I became obsessed with nail polish.  Essie is defiantly my go to brand. There's something about having well manicured nails - especially with a dark polish.  It makes a statement, and really looks good with any outfit.  My latest manicure is Essie Lady Godiva.  This is the perfect dark chocolate brown, and I get tons of compliments on this color.

Dry Oil Mist

Alterna Bamboo Smooth Kendi Oil

If you are looking for a dry oil that protects your hair from heat styling products, I recommend Alterna Bamboo Smooth Kendi Oil Dry Oil Mist.  After doing some research on how to grow out my hair, I read that using a dry oil helps protect your hair.  I was torn between the Moroccan Oil, and the dry oil mist.  I decided to go with the Alterna brand. This product is amazing, and not only protects your hair from damages caused by daily use of heat styling products, I also use it as a detangler.  Another plus to this is it does not contain parabens, and sulfates.

Stop the frizz

Honey + Olive Oil Hair Treatment

I have blonde over-processed hair, and desperately need to get a trim.  So, I decided to find a hair treatment I can do at home.  After doing some research I found honey, and olive oil to be the best mixture for my hair.  Honey, and olive oil are very moisturizing, and I didn't have any other ingredients to use.

Hair Treatment
  • one tablespoon honey
  • two tablespoons olive oil

Depending on how long your hair is you can make a second batch.  Mix the two ingredients, microwave for thirty seconds, and apply to damp washed hair.  I applied to my ends first, and worked my way to my roots.  I really didn't apply much to my roots, and just focused on my ends since that was the most damaged.  I wrapped my hair in a towel, and left the mixture on for about forty-five minutes.  This is a great time to do the Queen Helene Peel Off Mask!  After forty-five minutes, I rinsed the mixture in cool water, and washed my hair with L'Oreal EverPure Moisture Shampoo sulfate free.  My hair was very soft, and easy to comb!

Please say it isn't true

The scrunchie is coming back?

Where do I even begin?  Maybe I should quote Sex and the City - anything quoted by SATC always makes the situation better. "No self-respecting New York City Woman would be caught dead running around Manhattan in a scrunchie.”  Ladies, please read that quote over-and-over, and remember no matter where you live do not bring the scrunchie back - ever.  I don't care who the designer might be - Louis Vuitton or even Chanel.  I know that 2013 fashion trends are more 90's throwbacks, but this cannot happen.
